Maki, may I know where you got the Kamome Diner stills from? The problem is she Satomi kobayashi as Sachie does not have anyone walking in through her door. It's a shame, since it's a lot of fun even if it didn't feature food as a main character. And while there's the suggestion of overt themes or issues - the search for a home away from home, the importance of following your dreams, the actualization of female empowerment - Kamome Shokudo cannot be encapsulated in such a way. The viewer does not see much of the area in which the diner is located or the owner's residence or the midnight sun about which we often hear. I hate to put it down to earth but isn't it just boiled white rice in a nice shape?

I had fun myself, in the supermarket in Bangalore. The goals may be modest, but when we first walk into the diner not only are those humble dreams unrealized and, moreover, there is little prospect for the akmome.

Well, isn't pasta just flour and water and maybe eggs or something in a nice shape? One could quibble that "nothing happens," but I don't read the film that way.

I bought my dvd in the supermarket nearby. In a rare bit of explanation, the film reveals his origins to be far more earthly than one might initially expect. Thanks for the good posts. It may not be as profound as Tampopo or have as much universal appeal, but for anyone interested in Japanese culture or food or even supermarkets, I highly recommend it.

If one were to compare to Italian food, one might compare to subtirle perfect oil and garlic spaghetti: Thematically speaking, it's not simply reducible to "a movie about X.
